By midday, I had made it into the city. People and cars were everywhere! The shouts of the people, the blaring of the car horns, it was louder than I expected. My stomach let out a low growl and I moaned. I had almost forgotten. The last time I had eaten was the night I left the farm. That was two nights ago. “Alright,” I said out loud. “Food. How am I going to find some food?” Suddenly, out of nowhere, a Black Lab seemed to materialize out of the shadows. I jumped back and growled.
“What the heck?”
The Labrador stared at me apologetically.
“Oh sorry, the name’s Streak. Who might you be?”
I relaxed.
“Oh, nice to meet you, Streak. I’m Rain.”
“So what brings you to good ‘old London, miss Rain?”
“You see, I ran away from home to avoid being sold. I want to be a detective, not a house pet.”
Now, Streak’s chocolate brown eyes shown with interest.
“Hm, a detective, eh? Can I join your pack?”
“Well, you’re the first.”
“Great!”
With a wagging tail, he slid next to me. Streak informed me that I could find scraps in the silver bins that the humans called Trash Cans, or I can just walk right up to one and beg for food, which was risky. Streak nudged me in the side and nodded to a silver bin. I couldn’t tip it over, so he had to do it for me. I found some stale pizza crust and gladly ate it. Now wasn’t the time to be picky. We were perfectly content until a baker saw us and chased us off with a rolled up newspaper while screaming, “Beat it you street rats!” I growled to myself. Streak looked at me. “Better get used to it.” He laughed. “I guess I must.” I responded. I missed Skye and Thunder. I had to keep reminding myself that I would see them again someday. As dusk was nearing, we found a tipped over wooden barrel in an alleyway. “Ladies first!” Streak piped. I dipped my head in thanks. The night was cold and I was thankful for Streak’s warmth. After hours of whining to myself, I drifted off to sleep. When I awoke, Streak was gone. I panicked. “Streak, Streak! Where are you?” I howled. I bolted out of the alley and dashed madly around the block. I literally almost ran into a Rottweiler. I toppled over and looked up at him. He was well muscled and very tall compared to me.
“Watch where you’re going little lady.” He growled.
“S-Sorry.” I whimpered.
Instantly, my tail went in between my legs in submission.
“Please, sir, don’t eat me.”
The male laughed.
“Calm down, I don’t eat dogs for breakfast. I go by the name of Flash and you are?”
“Rain. A pleasure to meet you.”
“Oh a dog with manners? Are you a house pet?”
“No.” I said plainly. “I’m a stray through and through.”
He nodded. His brown eyes seemed to be focused somewhere else. I followed his gaze until I realized what he was looking at. “Streak! Your back! You scared me!” I made a mad dash over to him, toppling him over. I turned around to look at Flash. He rolled his eyes.
“So, are you two like a couple or something?” he teased.
“No, we aren’t. We just met.” Streak and I said together.
It was then that I noticed the screech of tires on pavement. A man with a white lab coat stepped out of the windowless van holding a chain pole. We were all too scared to move. When the man got the wire around Flash’s neck, the dog spazzed out. He was withering, twisting, and flopping around all in an attempt to get the chain off, but to no avail. The man sighed and shot him with a tranquilizer. I was next. He made that odd cooing noise that only humans could make. He slipped the chain over my head and I allowed myself to be placed in a cage in the van with Flash and some other dogs. Before I knew it, Streak was shoved in and the gate was latched and the van doors were closed. I swayed a little then felt the soft thud as I fainted next to Flash. Sometime later, I had woken up in a huge concrete pen in a nearly all white building with small windows and a whole mess of yapping dogs. I looked around. Flash and Streak were in the same pen as I was. The two were staring at each other, hackles raised and fur bristling. I padded over. “What in bloody heck is going on with you two?” I asked. When they saw me, all hostility was vaporized. “Rain! Your awake!” Streak yipped. He tackled me and started licking my face. Flash growled to himself, mumbling something that I couldn’t understand. “Ok, ok. Get off Streak. You’re over doing it just a tad bit.” I laughed. He nodded and obeyed.
“Now, How are we going to get out of here?” I asked them.
“A good question my friend.” Streak responded.
Flash thought for a moment then spoke up.
“A pal of mine was caught in the same situation that we are currently in. He told me that if you ever get caught and put in a shelter, the only way out is to get,” he paused before continuing. “Adopted. And if you don’t get adopted, the humans kill you.”
My eyes widened in fear. I started running around in circles.
“I DON’T WANT TO GET ADOPTED OR BE KILLED! I WANT TO BE A DETECTIVE!”
Streak soon fallowed my lead. Flash sat down and waited patiently for us to calm down. Once we did, he spoke.
“Detectives, mind if I join?”
Well, that came out of the blue.
“Sure.” I said. “Welcome.”
He nodded his thanks. Suddenly, Flash ordered us to be quiet. “Humans.” He whispered. “A mom and her daughter and two sons are looking for a dog. Now sit here and look cute.” He ordered.
All three of us went right up to the Iron fence and started whining and jumping up, tails wagging. The humans stopped in front of your pen. “Mommy,” one of them spoke. “Can we look at these doggies?” The mom turned to the shelter employee and he opened our gate and the children rushed in, wrapping their arms around us. The little girl was holding me so tightly that I thought that my eyes were going to pop out of my head. As much as I felt like biting her, I didn’t instead, I smothered her face with licks. She giggled with pure delight. Flash and Streak copied me. “Mommy!” The kids shouted, “They’re perfect! Can we have them, please, please, please?”
“Yes you may.”
The kids squealed in delight and half carried half dragged us to their car. When we got to their house, the three of us received names right away. Flash was Sam, Streak was Jet, and I was Princess. Really? That’s worse than Winslow! Flash teased me about my new name all that evening. I growled and told him to shut up. He didn’t. I went up to the girl’s room, went over to my new bed, which was pink and had flower prints to match the girl’s bed sheets. I wanted to vomit all over it so badly. Instead, I just curled up and went to sleep. Already, a plan was forming in my head to escape this, this torture chamber. A few days later, the sound of kibble being poured in a metal dish woke me up. I was so used to that sound now, and I knew what it meant. Food. I trotted downstairs and into the kitchen. I hated the feeling of the dry pellets in my mouth but I ate them anyway. Flash looked over at me as if he knew what I was planning.
“Caroline, John, Max, time for school.” The mom was saying.
“But, mom,” they protested. “We don’t want to leave our doggies home alone!”
“They won’t be alone, I’ll be here.”
They fell silent and scampered outside to catch the bus. I realized that I had to pee. I went to the back door, whimpered, and scratched the bottom of the door. “Alright.” The female human said as she opened the door. “Out you go. Go do your business.” The three of us dashed out. When I got to the yard I looked around. Sadly, The whole yard was fenced in.
“Racdrops!” I growled. “We’re trapped!”
Flash came out from behind a tree and went over to me.
“I know it sucks, we’ll get out sooner or later.”
Streak soon joined us.
“Better sooner than later. I can’t stand that kid Sam’s snoring and it’s only been like 14 days!”
I added on to that.
“Caroline dresses me up in ridiculous outfits and plays ‘tea time’ with me.”
Flash laughed then stopped when he saw me give him the “I’m going to rip your fur off.” look. I went over by the chain link fence and did my thing. I heard a snicker from the other side of the fence.
“Hey, want to escape from the humans?” It asked me.
“Yea, of coarse I do! Hold on, let me get my friends.”
“Ok.” the voice said. “But, be quick!”
I got Flash and Streak and led them to the fence. A dog was waiting for us. A Jack Russell.
“Howdy. They call me Pepper. Ya’ll must be Jet, Sam, and Princess. The new additions.”
I corrected him.
“Actually, those are our human names. I’m Rain, The Lab is Streak, and the Rottie over there is Flash.” Pepper nodded.
“Charmed, I’m sure.”
What an odd dog. Flash was getting impatient with the little guy.
“Alright, scrappy, tell us how to escape this pampered human place.” He growled.
“Ok, ok. Keep your collar on. So, here’s what ya do. First off, did your humans install a doggie door?”
I looked at him.
“No, they didn’t.”
“Ok, so when the human calls ya in, hide in some bushes or something. Eventually, he/she will give up and leave you outside. Once the lights inside the house flicker off, find a weak point in the fence and dig under it. Squeeze under then start running.”
“Thanks for your help, Pepper.”
That night, as the kids called us in, we did phase one of the plan. We hid.
“Mommy!” Caroline wailed. “Princess isn’t coming!”
“And neither is Jet and Sam!” the boys whined.
“They probably just want to sleep outside tonight.” The kids didn’t argue and the mom herded them inside for bed. Once the lights turned out, we ran all along the fence searching for a weak spot. Thankfully, Pepper was still outside. We found one and started digging like our lives depended on it. First, Flash squeezed out, and then Streak. I was about to go when I remembered Pepper. “Pepper, Care to join us? We are going to be detectives. He shrugged. “Why not? My humans don’t care about me. I won’t be missed.” He dug a hole under his fence and ran across the yard to me. I shoved him through and went under after him. Once I was on the other side of the fence I looked back for a split second. “Rain, come on! We have to go! The sun will be up soon!” It was Flash. I ran after him. I heard the faint noise of kibble being poured and our names being called. Then came the wails of the children when they discovered that we were gone. My heart ached for them but I knew that they would get another pet. We got to Big Ben and stopped to drink from a puddle, as it had rained during the night. The sun was so hot that it forced the four of us to retreat into the shade cast by the towering clock. I felt sorry for Streak and Flash, who had dark coats. The city noises no longer bothered me. From time to time, I found myself wondering about my mom and siblings. Where were they? Were they all right? I felt myself smiling despite my current situation. I had a new family. A new pack and a new leash on life. I was so happy that I jumped up, did a twist in the air, landed, and splashed the puddle water all over the other three. “Wheeee no more kibble for meee!” The others seemed a bit annoyed by my antics, bit I didn’t care. “C’mon, fellas, have some fun! We’re free!” Streak sighed. “But it’s too hot to do anything!” he whined. The others nodded in agreement. Fine, let them be party poopers. After I calmed down, I decided to watch the people that were strolling by. Some were eating; others were walking dogs or talking on some handheld device. As my eyes scanned my surroundings, I noticed a husky man walking a German Shepherd. I couldn’t help but stare. That dog was well muscled and tall, but not as tall as Flash. The German Shepherd caught sight of me and winked. In a matter of seconds, he turned around, faced the portly man square in the eyes, and then lunged for his stubby arm. Now, this dog was like a laser. He hit his target spot on. I thought that he must have been trained for Shutzhund. The man screamed as the dog’s teeth sunk deep into his arm. “Someone get this darn dog offa me!” he screeched. An officer ran over and literally had to pull the dog off of the man. The dog got off with a chunk of t-shirt… I gasped. Flash bolted upright. “Dang! Now that’s what I call a fighting dog!” I just rolled my eyes. After that little incident, the dog bolted in my direction. Panting, he spoke.
“I’m Bolt. Who are all of you?”
“I-I’m Rain and that’s Pepper, Streak, and Flash.” I pointed to each of them as I said their names.
Bolt nodded. I faced him.
“Mind if I change your name? Bolt as a name bugs me.”
The Brown and Black dog shrugged.
“Sure.”
“Can I call you Laser?”
“Yes, you may, Rain.”
I told the newly named Laser about why I was in London and What I was planning to do.
“Detectives, eh? Mind if I join your ranks?”
“Sure, why not.”
We now had four dogs in our group. Laser, Streak, Flash, and myself. I decided that this was all we needed.
“We need to think of a name to call ourselves.” Pepper said suddenly
“How about The Canine Fast Four?” Streak asked
“Streak, no. That doesn’t even make sense, and there are five of us.” I chided. “How about the Canine Force Five?”
The dogs nodded in agreement. I checked that off my to do list. We still needed to find a HQ and a Head Chief…
“What the heck?”
The Labrador stared at me apologetically.
“Oh sorry, the name’s Streak. Who might you be?”
