Slowly but surely, we ambled along the cracked road. We were sore and our paw pads were cracked and dry. Had we really traveled this far? Outlined against the rising sun, I spotted an old abandoned shack sitting in the woods by a little creek. I stopped and spoke to the others.
“See that stone shack over there in the woods? I think that’s where our HQ should be.”
Yes, vines were everywhere and the steps and the door had completely rotted away, but the basic structure had remained. I decided to explore. With a leap and a bound, I had reached the doorframe. Careful not to cut myself on the broken glass that littered the floor, I walked around. I was aware that the others had followed me in. I spotted some dusty paintings on the walls and fireplace mantle. The Fireplace was white marble and was deprived of logs. The tables and furniture was covered with a fine layer of dust, which made Streak and Pepper sneeze.
“I have reached a decision! This shall be our new HQ!” I declared suddenly.
Streak and Pepper moaned while Flash stared daggers at me. Laser didn’t really care at all.
“This place is like spoiled canned food!” Flash growled. “How are we going to wipe the dust off of everything? How are we going to get rid of the glass bits? Huh miss Princess?”
For some reason, he still got a kick out of that. I growled silently to myself. Then Pepper piped up.
“All this dust is messing with my allergies!” He complained.
Streak nodded in agreement. Great. No one liked this place but me. Laser, who was mute the whole time suddenly had something to say.
“It has potential.” He shrugged
That was all I needed.
“Alright! Guys, let’s start cleaning!”
We started licking all of the dust off everything. Finally, I found a rag and used that instead. The others looked on with envy.
“I’m the girl.” I had reminded them.
I remembered that on those detective shows that Sam and Max watched, the agents had really high-tech stuff. We’re dogs. How are we supposed to get that stuff? After 4 hours of spit shining, we took a break. I decided to go outside, so did the others. Once outside, I caught the scent of a dog. I heard the bushes rustle. I knew how this worked. Thunder and I would play this game all the time, so I was prepared. “Show yourself, trespasser!” I was surprised. A Golden Retriever walked out. He was submissive, which was good. He didn’t want to challenge me for my alpha rank. I spoke to him calmly.
“State your name and business.”
He stared at me blankly before replying.
“Good cloudy afternoon miss... uh… miss…”
“Rain.” I told him.
“Rain. I go by the name of Bailey.”
I introduced him to the others. Flash didn’t say anything. He just nodded a curt greeting. Streak was all over the dog.
“Were you a pet? Did humans own you? Where is your family? Where are you from? Where are you going? Will you join us?”
“STREAK, JUST SHUT UP ALREADY! Now, we wouldn’t want to overwhelm our new arrival now would we?”
I glared at Flash with a hint of “don’t scare him” showing in my eyes.
“Yes Rain. Sorry Rain.”
He slinked back inside.
“Sorry about that. His tail wags whenever he sees someone new.”
“What was Streak talking about? Will I join you? What?”
He was learning names fast.
“We’re detectives.” I blankly told him.
“Can I join you?”
Oh gosh, we had enough members. Oh well, one more couldn’t hurt.
“Sure.”
“Wheeee!”
He dashed inside to chat with Streak. They were going to become fast friends. Without me noticing, Flash slid up next to me and drew my attention to the sky. It was as grey as a squirrel’s pelt.
“Hey, we better get inside. Storm’s coming.”
I didn’t listen to him. Streak and Bailey were back outside. Why? Well I didn’t know. Suddenly, a flood appeared out of nowhere and swept me off my paws. I screamed the first name that came into my head.
“FLAAASSSHHHHH!”
He looked my way. Startled, he called the others to my position. I felt my head bang against a rock and the world went black. I felt my body being dragged over sodden grass and leaves slick with rain. When I opened my eyes, Flash was staring at me. What emotion was showing in his deep brown eyes? Was it love? Sadness? Concern? Nah, a dog like Flash would never have those emotions. “Are you ok?” he gently asked. My world turned upside down. Why was Flash being so… so… caring? Suddenly, another dog came into my line of sight. A Doberman. I snarled when I saw him. The dog looked startled. Flash soothed me.
“Shhh, calm down, Rain, this is Rune. He was the one that saved you.”
I was puzzled. So, Flash didn’t save me? Suddenly, I blurted out,
“Hey Rune, do you want to be our head chief?”
He stared at me in confusion.
Flash laughed.
“She’s delirious. That rock messed with her head.”
He shot me a nervous glance.
“Flash, I’m fine. Rune, I’m dead serious. do you or do you not?”
He shrugged.
“Sure.”
“Flash, how are the others and the HQ?”
“Fine. Both are a little damp.” He replied.
“Great.”
I shakily got to my paws to inspect the building. The water had washed away the plants and the broken glass. Everything was still inside, but a bit wet. It’ll dry. I needed to rename the group. “Canine Force Six, welcome to Paradise.” The others smiled as Flash sat with me to watch the sunset.
